Whitney, John Hay
(17 ago. 1904, Ellsworth, Me., EE.UU.–8 feb. 1982, Manhasset, N.Y.).

Multimillonario y deportista estadounidense, hijo de Harry Payne Whitney y Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. "Jock Whitney asistió a la Universidad de Yale y posteriormente a la Universidad de Oxford, la cual abandonó para administrar la fortuna familiar tras la muerte de su padre. Llegó a ser un jugador de polo de nivel internacional. En sus establos se criaron destacados caballos de carrera, invirtió en exitosas películas y obras de teatro en Broadway, y ostentaba con una de las colecciones de arte más finas de EE.UU. Fue capturado en Francia cuando era capitán de inteligencia de combate durante la segunda guerra mundial, pero escapó. Posteriormente fue galardonado con la Legión al Mérito. Entre 1956 y 1961 fue embajador en Gran Bretaña. Como editor (desde 1961) y redactor jefe del New York Herald Tribune trató infructuosamente de dar vitalidad a este periódico, pero dejó de editarse en 1966. En 1946 creó la Fundación John Hay Whitney.
